Along the Lower Nistru
Chisinau-Causeni (Talmaz, Popeasca)-Zaim-Tighina-Chisinau. 220 km. Total time – 8 hours (time on the road – 4 hours, excursions – 4 hours) Description: The route starts in Chisinau passes the “Town’s gates” and further on the Airport. On this tour visitors will enjoy the Lower Nistru southeastern region of Moldova. 90 kms from Chisinau lies Causeni. Here, where once there was the capital of the Tartars from Bugeac, one can visit the famous semi-buried church “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” (XVII century) which comprises valuable mural frescos. The neighboring village of Zaim is famous for inspiring and fostering the work of Alexei Mateevici, an illustrious poet, some of whose verses have been turned into the national anthem of Moldova. One can also visit his house and museum, and also a geopaleonthologic natural monument. Talmaz village, situated at 15 kms from Causeni, rests on the banks of the Nistru, where there is an old nature reserve, The Turkish Garden, and the old riverbed, now the “Blind Nistru” lake. Talmaz is one of the biggest and oldest villages in Moldova, which has successfully preserved its popular customs and traditions. On the way back, travelers pass through a segment of Upper Traian’s Wall near Chircaiesti, and further on reach the town of Tighina (Bender). A tour of the town should include a visit to the historic medieval Fortress “Tighina”, “Carol XII” museum, and a mineral water spring “Varnita”. On the way back to Chisinau, a beautiful dendrological park in Harbovat can be visited. |
